Are testemonials actually right anymore?



A player has been at a club for ten years, their average wage over that time has been £60k (for arguments sake), that is ten years at double what most of the fans earn (in fact, maybe 3 times, or more), so the player has earnt maybe 30 years worth of "normal income" in the 10 year period, the same fans then dig deep and give the player another £150k, the player then goes on to play another 5 years (maybe more) at the top end of the salary scale.



Is it the job of RL fans to make RL players 'turnover millionaires'?



Personally, I think not.

For me its not even about the money. If a player has shown the loyalty and ability to stay with the club for 10 years then I'm happy to show some gratitude by supporting testimonial events. Yes they earn a decent wage but they could be earning it elsewhere.

A testemonial, where the customers fork out.



(This is NOT about Richard in particular, it's about the events in general)

A testimonial is a way for fans to voluntarily give something back to a player. They dont have to, its a personal choice and I wouldn't criticise anyone who chose not to. I have no problem with a player having the opportunity to arrange events for fans to show their appreciation for their loyalty and service when they could quite easily have gone elsewhere.

I know what the "point" is, I am saying is it still relevant, which you obviously think it is.



I just think it is a throw back to the days when playing careers were short, earnings were low, and players played as well as doing a full time job.

I'd say its relevant as long as fans are still willing to support them.



I do agree wages are generally high enough for players to have enough money to start a new career after rugby, but what incentive do players have to remain loyal to a club if we take away the testimonial?

They don't, the same as any other employee.



To be honest, I think they will come to an end soon anyway, as their tax status will change (as it should)

But they are not the same as any other employee. They are in demand from other employers who could possibly offer them more money. As a club we should be able to offer an incentive to players to remain loyal as it is in our best interests as well.



Footballers on mega money still get testimonials so I dont really think rugby players are getting more than they deserve.

If they were not supporting it for anything like a reasonble reason then fair enough. However, they are planks for the reasons stated. HTH.
